Travel, Turkey, and Tight shoulders: A Thanksgiving Reminder
Come aboard with me as I share my adventure sailing from Newfoundland & St. Pierre.
This season always reminds me how grateful I am for the trust you place in me and for the privilege of walking alongside you in your healing. The holidays can ask a lot of the body and spirit, and the thought of that inspired me to reach out with warmth, appreciation, and a reminder to treat yourselves with tenderness.
As you’re finalizing your Thanksgiving plans don’t forget to practice a little self care to ensure you feel your best.
I don’t want anyone to repeat what some of my clients have gone through:
🦃 One client tweaked her back lifting her suitcase out of the trunk of her car. No one wants a side of back pain at their Thanksgiving dinner!
🚙 Don’t be like my client who felt his leg going numb while driving but just kept going and didn’t stop to stretch!
💻 Another made it through Thanksgiving but not Black Friday—she ended up with terrible neck pain after hours of online shopping. She could feel the tension creeping in but just couldn’t step away from her computer!
Let’s face it, airplane seats aren’t built for posture, long drives compress our spine, and hours in the kitchen can tighten your neck and shoulders.
Sitting for too long in a slouched position can aggravate underlying pain in our body.
Tips to arrive at your destination without more tension in your body:
Adjust your seat so you have a lumbar curve and not a rounded slouched position.
Roll up a blanket or jacket at your low back to support your back in optimal alignment. Or better yet, purchase a lumbar support here.
Get up often (hourly is ideal) and walk around & straighten up.
Driving? Be the passenger so your body can relax. If you must be the driver, adjust your seat so you are further back from the wheel with arms extended & not hunched over. Adjust your seat so you are not slouching.
However you travel, be sure to stretch your neck & hip flexors once you arrive.
No matter what your Thanksgiving looks like, I hope you take care of your body so you can truly enjoy the food, the fun, and the family circus. And the emotional stress & family drama? Don’t worry—that’s definitely a topic for another email!
✨ Remember the self-care techniques we’ve practiced in your sessions.
✨ Pack your MFR tools to release tension after long trips or poor mattresses.
✨ And if you’ve got future travel plans, be sure to book a session before or after to help your body reset.
As for me, I’ll be spending Thanksgiving visiting Mike’s aunts, uncles & cousins in New Jersey—a lot of driving packed into two days so I’ll be practicing what I preach! My lumbar roll will be in the car and my MFR ball is packed in my overnight bag.
May your Thanksgiving be filled with gratitude, good vibes and just the right amount of pie!
